California Hotel Garden and Greenhouse

The California Hotel is a low-income housing development in West Oakland where we manage a greenhouse enterprise program and garden; it is also the site of a new partnership with the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation. We sponsor programming, quarterly events, and greenhouse enterprise opportunities so residents can fully participate in the re-creation of the Hotel as a site for community gathering.

Our work at the California Hotel has supported residents in identifying important issues, creating solutions, and building community. Over the past two years, we supported the emergence of a Resident’s Council that meets monthly to talk about garden projects and that served as an on-site team for planning events, launching programs, and building community with the surrounding neighborhood. Beyond our garden and outreach work, this group now regularly discusses issues like pesticide use and bedbugs in the building and raises concerns with property management.

The Garden and Greenhouse are also home to our Garden Enterprise Program. In this program, People’s Grocery employs California Hotel residents to help with plant start sales around the Bay Area. This project encourages public support for our programs while providing an income to someone who lives on site.
