Development Director – People’s Grocery

People's Grocery is a community-based organization in West Oakland that develops creative solutions to the health problems in our community that stem from a lack of access to and knowledge about healthy, fresh foods. Our mission is to build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the West Oakland community.

 

Position Summary:
People’s Grocery seeks a Development Director to lead grant and donor fundraising for a $600,000 budget and lead a team of 2-3 staff and interns, working closely with the Executive Director.  This is a full-time senior staff position and reports directly to People’s Grocery Executive Director.  Position open until filled and starts immediately.


Responsibilities:

OVERSEE ALL FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR PEOPLE’S GROCERY
Create and implement the organizational fundraising plan and supervise support staff to carry out their functions related to the plan.  Work closely with Executive Director to cultivate relationships with funders and donors. 

  • GRANTS
    • Develop strategy with ED and Fund Development Committee of the Board
    • Research and cultivate grant giving prospects
    • Write and Develop Proposals and collateral materials
    • Develop and maintain tracking, reporting, and evaluation systems
  • INDIVIDUAL DONORS:
    • Develop an individual donor fundraising strategy including an annual calendar of activities related to an individual donor management program.
    • Develop and coordinate grassroots fundraising campaigns and oversee special events.
    • Motivate staff, board and volunteers to actively participate in fundraising.
    • Cultivate funder and donor relationships, including preparing regular funder updates.
    • Oversee all special events for donor cultivation
  • EARNED INCOME
    • Participate with Program staff in the planning of all earned income streams
    • Integrate earned income programs with other fundraising strategies
  • SYSTEMS: Manage development systems, including tracking foundation deadlines and grant requirements.  Oversee functionality of database and communications systems.
  • SUPERVISION: Supervise the volunteers, interns, and other support staff in carrying out their development related tasks

 

OVERSEE FUNDRAISING ADMINISTRATION
Responsible for ensuring that organizational operations function efficiently and that fundraising and financial systems are integrated smoothly.  Works closely with the Office Manager and other support staff in the following areas:

  • Lead coordination of grant budgets and grant reporting including budget reports.
  • Work with finance department on coordinating budget development and finance reporting.
  • Oversee database administration, upkeep, and necessary development to keep pace with fundraising.
  • Support the Executive Director in planning, budgeting and coordination of organizational fund development.
  • Participate in the Fund Development Committee of the Board of Directors and help with Board fund development where necessary.


Required Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years experience with fundraising and a track record of success.
  • At least 3 years at a management level in fund development.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for grassroots / individual fundraising.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills.  Excellent editing skills.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, email, and web.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic and social justice.


Most qualified candidates will also have additional experience

  • Knowledge of nonprofit finance.
  • Experience supervising and developing staff.
  • Experience with special events and/or donor development.
  • Familiarity with campaign communications, including media, newsletters, and email blasts.
  • Familiarity with fundraising databases.

Compenstation and Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hour) position.  Competitive salary and benefits package are included.   Training and Mentorship will be available.
