GET COOKING!
In partnership with New Foundry Ventures and Lifelong Medical.
The Get Cooking! class provides West Oakland Middle School parents with cooking instruction on homemade meals, nutrition education, and food justice discussion. Interested graduates of this and our other nutrition education programs have been trained as paid Community Health and Nutrition Demonstrators (HANDS), offering cooking and nutrition demonstrations at hospitals, schools, public events, and other community-based gatherings.
The Get Cooking Class brought our attention to a young mother who already had significant cooking and nutrition skills that is interested in starting a healthy catering business. She is now one of the Growing Justice Institute Liaisons, is leading a revision of the cooking class curriculum, and is working in the community as a caterer.
“Letting residents know that there’s a resource for them to have access to healthy food, and activities they can be a part of, is basically saying we will listen to their voice.” JS, a West Oakland resident and outreach worker.
FLAVAS OF THE GARDEN
Our Flavas of the Garden program is a series of workshops at the California Hotel, on Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
This year there are 3 catagories of workshops; 1. The Art Movement: create, get relaxed or get moving using various art forms; 2. Food Demonstrations: learn to make your own Hot Sauce or how to use Healing Aryuvedic Spices; 3. Economic Fermentation Series: We show you multiple ways to save money by making your own cheese, bike repair, building your own raised garden bed. Each week there is also a Garden Dinner & “harvesting”--help to pick fresh ingredients and prepare a delicious meal and then eat and enjoy. You can bring home leftovers and take home some fresh produce straight from the garden.
Join us for nourishment of the mind & the stomach!
