People's Grocery operates 2 urban gardens currently in Oakland: The 55th St. Garden and the 59th Street Spiral Garden. We grow a seasonal variety of vegetables using organic gardening techniques to ensure fresh and sustainably grown produce for the community. Our gardens are also hands-on learning labs and venues for gathering and learning together. Many groups of children, youth and adults visit the gardens and participate in workdays, tours and talks.

55th St Community Garden
The 55th street garden is located at 1167 55th street, between Marshal and Fremont streets. It's about 1.5 blocks West of San Pablo Avenue. A 4,500sf urban garden with fruit trees, shade structures, an elaborate composting program, and a solar-powered irrigation system. In 2002, People's Grocery partnered with the North Oakland Land Trust to save this property from development and transform it from an abandoned and blighted vacant lot into a thriving community garden complete with raised beds for culinary herbs, perennials, flowers and vegetables produced for our Grub Box (CSA), Cooking Class and Community Hands programs. 59th St Spiral Gardens
The 59th Street Spiral Garden is located at 888 59th Street. We are collaborating with Spiral Gardens Community Food Security Project to reconstruct this plot of land back into the beautiful urban garden that it once was. The 59th St. garden has a unique characteristic - a little wild and very fertile - and is a great place to grow food. We are excited about the opportunity to expand our garden space in order to better serve our community. Currently we are working to develop a new portion of this garden to grow food for our Grub Box (CSA) program. VOLUNTEER
